About Canon CN-E Compact-Servo

Canon New Compact-Servo Lens

Now, it’s a family: Canon today announced its second Compact-Servo Lens, a 70-200mm model with the same attributes as the Canon Compact-Servo 18-80mm T4.4 EF Lens, which was introduced last year. The same size and weight of its wide-tele zoom sibling, the 70-200mm T4.4 EF is designed for cinematographers moving up from Canon EF lenses and DSLRs to dedicated Canon Cine cameras such as the Canon EOS C100. The new lens offers a similar range of functions as its sibling model, making it well-suited for video applications such as documentary, cinema, news gathering, wedding and other video production.

Description

A NEW CLASS OF CINEMA-QUALITY LENSES

The Compact-Servo family of lenses are a new 4K Super 35mm lens category in the Cinema EOS lineup. They combine the qualities from our EF lenses such as a light weight, compact size, integrated autofocus and excellent optical quality with the professional video features of our Cinema lenses, such as minimal focus breathing and parfocal zooming. These features, along with high level 4K optical performance and functionality such as integrated servo controls for zoom, iris and focus for electronic control from a camera, optional remote controller and optional ZSG-C10 Zoom Servo Grip make the Compact-Servo lenses ideal for those seeking the traditional lens operational practices associated with professional cinematography. The COMPACT-SERVO 18–80mm T4.4 EF and the COMPACT-SERVO 70–200mm T4.4 EF offer professional video functionality all at an affordable price, making them ideal for a wide range of video applications including documentary, cinema, news gathering, wedding and other video production.

HIGH LEVEL 4K OPTICAL PERFORMANCE

The 4K optical performance produces a significantly sharper image than 2K/HD. The various advanced design strategies used help to ensure over 4K resolution at picture center and a careful control of falloff of image sharpness at picture extremities.

The excellent contrast range associated with High Dynamic Range (HDR) imaging helps ensure both deep black reproduction and the excellent handling of scene specular highlights. HDR image capture significantly enhances both the contrast and the richness of colors in a scene, but it also poses a potential challenge in exacerbating the visibility of any lens chromatic aberrations. The Compact-Servo lenses’ optical design carefully anticipated this, incorporating advanced optical design strategies to help minimize such aberrations.

PARFOCAL OPERATION

Canon Compact-Servo lenses are parfocal in both manual and autofocus modes. The Compact-Servo lenses employ a special compensating lens group that moves to maintain precise focus while a separate lens group performs the zooming action. Maintaining focus while changing focal length allows the Compact-Servo lenses to be used in video production.

ZOOM & FOCUS

Canon Compact-Servo lenses maintain a wide aperture of T4.4 (F4.0) throughout their zoom range. Designed specifically for video production, Canon Compact-Servo lenses minimize focus breathing when adjusting focus, making them ideal for cinema production. Focus breathing is a change in magnification of the image when adjusting focus.

CONTINUOUS IRIS CONTROL

Canon’s Compact-Servo lenses can smoothly adjust between open and closed for precise exposure control and live in-shot changes. This can be useful to compensate for a change in exposure when moving between indoor and outdoor light levels within a shot. The 9-blade iris creates a rounded aperture so out-of-focus highlights appear circular. An odd number of iris blades increases the number of radial lines in a lens flare while simultaneously reducing the radial lines’ size, creating a less distracting flare. Compact-Servo lenses’irises can also be completely closed, which is useful when adjusting black balance.

IMAGE STABILIZATION (IS)

Compact-Servo lenses offer three levels of Image Stabilization to allow for stable, smooth images. IS modes include the standard mode for handheld operation, a maximum mode for high-frequency movement such as vehicle vibration and a smooth mode intended for tripod-based operating. The IS function can also be switched off entirely to match user preferences.Canon’s color science has become highly refined over generations of lens designs, paying the closest attention to a pleasing skin tone reproduction. Compact-Servo lenses can be used interchangeably with other Canon Cinema lenses during the same production since both have the same warm, cine-look color characteristics – making it easier to maintain consistent color when multiple lenses are used.

A flange back adjustment mechanism is built-in allowing you to adjust on site which helps to provide even greater optical performance among various cameras.

FOCAL LENGTH

The wide zoom range of the COMPACT-SERVO 18–80mm T4.4 EF and COMPACT-SERVO 70–200mm T4.4 EF is highly versatile, allowing the Compact-Servo lenses to be your main “go to” lenses. The generous 10mm overlap helps minimize the need to switch between lenses in the midst of a “fast-action” shoot. Go from wide angle to extreme telephoto with just two lenses. The 70–200mm T4.4 EF is also compatible with Canon’s EF 1.4x III and EF 2x III extenders.

COMPACT & LIGHTWEIGHT

Compact-Servo lenses borrow from Canon’s experience in EF lenses to deliver a compact and lightweight design. This allows lenses to be used in a wide range of shooting applications and environments. Both lenses are just 7.2 inches long, with the COMPACT-SERVO 18–80mm T4.4 EF weighing 2.65 lbs. and the COMPACT-SERVO 70–200mm T4.4 EF just 2.76 lbs.

MANUAL OPERATING EASE

Servo controls on Compact-Servo lenses can be disengaged for the focus, iris and zoom rings. All three rings are designed for smooth, fluid operation. In full manual mode, the barrel rings are direct controls for precise adjustment. The focal length can be set and with minimal focus breathing each Compact-Servo lens can function as a variable prime.

SERVO ZOOM DRIVE UNIT

The built-in servo drive controls zoom and can be powered through the lens mount or a separate port. It is compatible with Canon zoom and focus broadcast style controllers and an optional Zacuto® Z-CNYC Y-cable can be used to connect both zoom and focus controllers to each lens, allowing for simultaneous remote operation. For handheld use, the ZSG-C10 Zoom Servo Grip can be mounted directly to the servo drive of both Canon Compact-Servo lenses.

Dual Pixel CMOS AF

Ultrasonic Motor (USM) drives provide fast and quiet autofocus. Select Canon EF-mount Cinema Cameras with Dual Pixel Autofocus are supported. Canon Electromagnetic Diaphragm (EDM) technology incorporates a motor directly to the lens iris for precise and smooth auto exposure response.

EF COMMUNICATION FUNCTIONS

Compact-Servo lenses are designed to work with select Canon EF-mount Cinema cameras. Because these devices are designed to function together, the complete kit adds enhanced functionality. Integrated autofocus, smooth image stabilization, connected control and metadata information, and lateral chromatic aberration correction are all included when using compatible Canon EF-mount Cinema cameras (EOS C700 / C300 Mark II / C100 Mark II).

The lens also features a 2.8x zoom magnification, a focal length range of 70-200mm and a 130deg. smooth rotating focus ring. The lens is also compatible with our Canon EF 1.4x III and EF 2x III Extenders. The 70-200mm T4.4 EF lens offers professional video functionality all at an affordable price, making it ideal for a wide range of video applications including documentary, cinema, news gathering, wedding and other video production.

Lens Design Optimized for Video Application
Different aspects of lens performance are emphasized when shooting video as oppo sed to still images. A zoom range through commonly used focal lengths, high level 4K optical performance and a smooth aperture iris designed for motion picture capture all demonstrate the COMPACT-SERVO 70-200mm T4.4 EF lens’s optimization for video.

Telephoto Zoom that Covers the Commonly-Used Focal Length of 70mm-200mm
A telephoto zoom can be useful in narrative or documentary video production for capturing medium to tight fields of view. The 70-200mm T4.4 EF lens is also compatible with Canon’s EF 1.4x III and EF 2x III Extenders.

Parfocal Operation – Precise Focus Through the Entire Zoom Range
The 70-200mm T4.4 EF lens is parfocal in both manual and autofocus modes. The lens employs a special compensating lens group that moves to maintain precise focus while a separate lens group performs the zooming action. Maintaining focus while changing focal length allows the lens to be used in video production where zooming while recording is required.

Consistent Brightness Throughout the Entire Zoom Range
The 70-200mm T4.4 EF lens maintains a wide aperture of T4.4 (F4.0) throughout their zoom range. This allows zooming while at maximum aperture without any dimming of the image.

High Level 4K Optical Performance
The 4K optical performance of the 70-200mm T4.4 EF lens produces a significantly sharper image than 2K/HD. The 70-200mm T4.4 EF lens was designed to help minimize such aberrations.

Color Consistency with Canon Cinema Lenses
Canon’s color science has become highly refined over generations of lens designs, paying the closest attention to a pleasing skin tone reproduction. The 70-200mm T4.4 EF lens can be used interchangeably with other Canon Cinema lenses during the same production since both have the same warm, cine-look color characteristics – making it easier to maintain consistent color when multiple lenses are used.

Iris Mechanism for Motion Picture
The 70-200mm T4.4 EF lens can smoothly adjust between open and closed for precise exposure control and live in-shot changes. The 9-blade iris creates a rounded aperture so out-of-focus highlights appear circular. An odd number of iris blades also helps create a less distracting flare. The iris on the lens can also be completely closed, which is useful when adjusting black balance.

Continuous Iris Control Capability with Iris Ring
A Cinema lens requires an iris that can be smoothly adjusted between wide open and closed. Continuous adjustment allows not only for precise exposure control, but also smooth adjustment live in shot while recording. This can be useful to help compensate for change in exposure due to spotty clouds or moving between indoor and outdoor light levels within a shot.

9-Blade Iris
More iris blades create a rounder aperture, resulting in out-of-focus highlights that appear more circular. An odd number of iris blades means that there will be a larger number of small radiating points on a flare, helping to prevent distracting artifact.

Iris Closing
The aperture on the 70-200mm T4.4 EF lens can close completely, allowing no light to pass through. This is useful in black balancing a camera.

Auto Iris Available
The auto exposure system in the 70-200mm T4.4 EF lens capitalizes on Canon’s Electromagnetic Diaphragm (EMD) technology that has been highly refined over many years in the EF lens series. This technology integrates the lens iris assembly and a miniature stepping motor in a single unit. Electronic pulses from the camera controls the motor to map numerous steps across the full range of the iris mechanism. This AE control loop is fast and silent. An AE Shift mode allows a small manual override for fine adjustments to exposure.

Flange Back Adjustment
A flange back adjustment mechanism is built-in allowing you to adjust on site which helps to provide even greater optical performance among various cameras.

Servo Capability in a Compact and Lightweight Design
The COMPACT-SERVO 70-200mm T4.4 EF lens includes the functionality of professional broadcast and cinema lenses along with compatibility with professional lens accessories. It fits these features in Canon’s unique design that allows it to remain compact and lightweight. This best-of-both-worlds approach allows the versatility to shoot with the lens in a wide range of productions.

Servo Zoom Drive Unit
The 70-200mm T4.4 EF lens incorporates a servo drive unit directly in the body of the lens. The servo drive unit allows electronic control over zoom and provides an option to be disengaged for direct manual control. The integrated design can power the servo drive through the lens mount on appropriate cameras or power can be input through a separate port as in traditional lens servo systems. The servo control is compatible with Canon’s ZSG-C10 Zoom Servo Grip which can be mounted directly onto the 70-200mm T4.4 EF lens, as well as standard broadcast style controllers (including Canon’s FPD-400D and ZSD-300D) for remote operation.

Servo Control Capability for Zoom Function
The integrated servo drive allows for electronic control over the zoom. The control is electromechanical, rotating the actual geared rings on the lens housing via servo motors. These motors can also be disengaged, allowing for full manual control. The zoom servo can be remotely controlled or operated using a rocker switch on the side of the lens.

Power Provided via Camera Mount
On select Cinema EOS cameras, the EF lens mounts electrical contacts provide the necessary power to operate the servos on the 70-200mm T4.4 EF lens. This helps eliminates cabling and possible mounting issues. The lens can also be powered remotely through an accessory power port.

Compatible with Broadcast Style Servo Lens Controllers
The 70-200mm T4.4 EF lens’s Servo Control can be operated remotely for tripod or other non-handheld use. Canon’s FPD-400D Digital Focus Servo Demand for Canon Lens Control Kits can be used for remote focus control and the ZSD-300D Digital Zoom Servo Demand for digital ENG/EFP lenses used for remote zoom control. For use in studio configurations, an optional Zacuto Z-CNYC Y-cable can be used to connect zoom and focus controllers to each lens.
