Description

Compatible with EF/EF-S Lenses*

Whether you’re purchasing your first EOS camera or your fifth, the EOS R camera is designed to integrate smoothly into existing EOS systems. Engineered to work seamlessly with RF lenses, it maintains complete compatibility with EF and EF-S lenses by using one of three optional Mount Adapters. When using EF-S lenses, the EOS R even crops automatically to reflect the APS-C sized sensor the lenses are designed for.

* Optional Mount Adapter EF-EOS R is required when using EF/EF-S lenses with an EOS R camera.

54mm Large Diameter and Short Back Focus

The RF mount on the EOS R camera has a large, 54mm internal diameter that enables impressive handling and provides increased flexibility for lens design. And thanks to the camera’s mirrorless design, the lens’s rear element can be much closer to the image plane. This reduced back focus distance, combined with the RF mount’s 54mm diameter, helps facilitate lenses of stellar optical quality and stunning performance while enabling innovative compact camera and lens designs.

20mm Flange Focal Distance with Robustness for Professional Use

All RF lenses feature a 20mm flange focal distance, which is the distance from the lens mount to the surface of the image sensor. This flange focal distance balances the benefits of short back focus with the engineering requirements necessary for mount stability. Accordingly, the RF mount’s flange focal distance ensures excellent optical performance while maintaining the mount rigidity and camera durability necessary for real-world operation.

12 Pins for Quickly Communicating Large Amounts of Information

With a robust 12 pin connection between the camera and the lens, the EOS R camera and RF lenses are able to communicate at a higher speed, transmitting a larger amount of data and information for incredibly fast AF, plus enhanced image stabilization and optimization.

Open up New Possibilities with Control Ring Mount Adapters

Beyond enabling use of EF and EF-S lenses on the EOS R camera, the Control Ring Mount Adapter EF-EOS R and the Drop-in Filter Mount Adapter EF-EOS R add functions that open up a number of new possibilities for creative image capture. The Control Ring Mount Adapter EF-EOS R adds a control ring like those found on RF lenses, providing the same level of control to your EF and EF-S lenses and supporting the same setting configuration regardless of lens. The Drop-in Filter Mount Adapter EF-EOS R enables compatibility with EF and EF-S lenses and includes drop-in filter capability for use with circular polarizing filters or variable ND filters. This enhancement enables compatibility with numerous lenses regardless of their front diameter, and makes filter use possible with lenses like the ultra-wide EF 11¬–24mm f/4L USM lens or the tilt-shift TS-E 17mm f/4L lens which cannot accept a filter on the front.

Variety of Mount Adapter Options for Expanded Compatibility with EF/EF-S Lenses

Mount adapters, such as the Mount Adapter EF-EOS R, deliver seamless connections between the EOS R camera and EF and EF-S lenses with all functions intact. Offering L series level weather and dust sealing, the Mount Adapter EF-EOS R is even compatible with EF extenders like the Extender EF 1.4x III to extend your camera’s optical reach. With an entire arsenal of EF and EF-S lenses at your disposal, the Mount Adapter EF-EOS R and other mount adapters ensure endless creative possibilities for the EOS R camera.

30.3 Megapixel Full-frame CMOS Sensor

The EOS R camera features a Canon-developed and produced 35mm full-frame CMOS sensor with approx. 30.3 effective megapixels. It employs the DIGIC 8 Image Processor to enhance the speed of operations across the board. This means fast, efficient performance and phenomenal image quality for big prints, impressive 4K video and more.

ISO 40000

The EOS R camera has a standard ISO sensitivity range of 100¬–40000 for stills and 100¬–25600 for video (100–12800 for 4K video shooting). Combined with the EOS R camera’s remarkable low-light AF performance, still and video shooting is possible even in dark situations in a variety of places and occasions.

Digital Lens Optimizer

The EOS R camera has an in-camera Digital Lens Optimizer that works with RF lenses (and EF/EF-S lenses with a Mount Adapter) to provide a substantial improvement in image quality. The Digital Lens Optimizer limits deterioration in image quality caused by low-pass filters or wide-aperture lens designs. It is particularly effective at correcting peripheral aberration, providing a high amount of detail for beautifully natural results. It’s usable both during shooting and when developing RAW data, and does not affect continuous shooting speeds. Data from compatible EF and EF-S lenses is built into the camera, and data information from RF lenses is transferred near instantly through the EOS R’s 12 pin communication system.

High-speed Focusing in 0.05 sec.*

The EOS R camera’s highly responsive Dual Pixel CMOS AF system features an incredible 5,655 manually selectable AF points** and can deliver sharp focus within 0.05 seconds*. This means fast action can be captured and focus can be maintained with speed, accuracy and ease. Whether taking candid photos in the park or making movies in an event space, the EOS R’s fast AF helps ensure speedy, accurate and consistent AF.
* Based on the results of AF speed tests in accordance with CIPA guidelines. Results may vary depending on shooting conditions and lens in use. Relies on internal measurement method.
Test conditions:
• Brightness at time of distance measurement: EV12 (regular temperature, ISO 100)
• Shooting mode: M
• Lens in use: RF 24–105mm F4 L IS USM, with a focal distance of 24mm
• Live-view mode: On (with manual shutter button operation)
• AF mode: Live single-point AF (central)
• AF operation: One-shot AF
** Available AF points may decrease when shooting with AF cropping or in movie mode, or depending on camera settings or lens attached.

AF Area Coverage of Approx. 88% x 100%*

The EOS R camera features an expansive focus area of approx. 88% horizontal and 100% vertical^ not only with RF lenses, but also when working with select EF lenses. With older EF lenses, or with Extender types I and II, the EOS R focuses approx. 80% horizontally and 80% vertically. This means fast and impressive focusing even if your subject is way off center.
*When shooting still photos. Actual coverage varies depending on the lens in use.

AF Points and AF Area

The EOS R camera features a sophisticated AF system with a maximum of 5,655 manually selectable AF points*, which covers almost the entire image sensing area. The EOS R can also be configured to focus on specific areas, using an extended range of selectable modes that include 1-point AF, Expand AF Area, Zone AF and Large Zone AF in addition to the conventional Face+Tracking AF.
* Available AF points may decrease when shooting with AF cropping or in movie mode, or depending on camera settings or lens attached.

EV -6 Low-light Autofocus*

Amazing for nighttime photography or in very low light, the EOS R camera’s brilliant AF can operate in light as dim as a light rating of EV -6* where other AF systems may fail or search. Phenomenal AF is achieved even when using lenses with high F numbers. This ultra-sensitive AF works in concert with the EOS R’s EVF to clearly capture subjects even when there’s limited light.
*When using RF 50mm F1.2 L USM, with central AF point.

f/8 and f/11 Compatible in All AF Areas

The EOS R camera’s brilliant AF system doesn’t just work with bright lenses. With the EOS R, autofocus will operate over nearly the entire image area even when used with compatible f/8 and f/11 lenses. For example, users can take ultra-telescopic 800mm shots using a compact EF 100–400mm f/4–5.6 IS II lens together with an EF 2x III extender, and AF will function properly over the entire field. When used with a III-type extender, the effective AF range is limited to an area roughly 88% x 100% of the total image frame, or 80% x 80% if combined with a I/II type extender.

Variety of AF Modes including Eye Detection AF

The EOS R camera’s Face+Tracking mode helps enhance reliability for tracking moving subjects. When the camera detects a human face, it uses the subject’s eye as the AF point, choosing the eye closest to the camera by default. Photographers can also select which eye to focus on by touching the screen or using the camera’s AF point selection button and cross keys.

Touch and Drag AF

Touch and Drag AF makes it fast and easy to select a focus point without taking your eye away from the viewfinder. Using the Touchscreen LCD, it’s as simple as pointing to the desired area of focus. The chosen AF point is then displayed in the camera’s EVF for quick confirmation.

Focus Peaking

Among the EOS R camera’s manual focus aids, Focus Peaking helps establish the focus area quickly and clearly. With manual focus peaking, the outline of the area in focus is indicated by a colored line. Focus Peaking is usable in conjunction with the EOS R’s Focus Guide feature, and can be customized with peaking color and detection level specifications that fit the project at hand.

Dual Pixel Focus Guide

For help when using manual focus while recording videos and shooting still images, the EOS R camera’s Dual Pixel Focus Guide not only indicates when subjects are in focus, but also displays where the position of focus is relative to the subject. This function can be combined with Zone AF or Face Detection AF as well.

4K 30p, Full HD 60p, HD 120p

Whether shooting videos to share with friends online or serving as a secondary camera on a large production, the EOS R camera offers advanced recording features such as 4K at 29.97 fps, Full HD at 59.94 fps and HD at 119.9 fps. Helpful functions include distortion correction during recording and Movie Digital IS. Additionally, video can be recorded during still photo shooting by simply pressing the Movie Shooting button.

Canon Log

Canon Log is included in the EOS movie gamma selections. This feature reduces heavy shadows and blown out highlights, delivering movie images with approximately 12 stops of dynamic range (at ISO 400) for excellent shadow and highlight detail. Especially useful for moviemakers and videographers planning on using video clips in post-production and integrating EOS R footage with clips from other cameras, Canon Log is an indispensable tool that helps make the EOS R a serious movie camera.
